Bug Light 1

$65.00

A one-of-a-kind, 4x5 inch tintype made via the 19th century, wet plate collodion photographic process. It's a unique, handmade photograph on aluminum.

Bug Light overlooks Portland Harbor. Its real name is the Portland Breakwater Light. It used to sit at the end of a long, granite breakwater but the land around it was filled in to construct shipyards during World War II.

The first lighthouse on the site was made of wood and built in 1855. This version was erected in 1875. It's 25 feet tall, made of cast iron and adorned with Corinthian columns. It was designed by architect Thomas U. Walter, who also designed United States Capitol.

Bug Light's 6th order Fresnel lens was automated in 1934 and then decommissioned in 1943. It was re-lighted in 2002 and is now listed as a private navigation aid.
