Spring Point Ledge Light 1

$65.00

An original, one-of-a-kind, 4x5 inch tintype (on aluminum) made via the 19th century, wet plate collodion photographic process. This image was created Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025 in South Portland, Maine.

Spring Point Ledge Light sits at the end of a 900-foot, granite breakwater on the west side of Portland Harbor. The 54-foot tall lighthouse was built in 1897 after several steamships ran aground on its namesake ledge.

The lighthouse was electrified in 1934 and the breakwater was built in 1951, connecting it to the mainland. The beacon was automated in 1960.

Its red-and-white, fifth order Fresnel lens still flashes every six seconds and can be seen as far as 14 miles out to sea.
